District Championship Advancement

While we do not yet have the full advancement criteria for the 2023 FIRST® Championship determined, we wanted to share one update from historic rules as teams are starting to plan their seasons.

Beginning with the 2023 FIRST® Robotics Competition season, teams who compete in District areas will not be able to advance to the FIRST Championship from Regional events. Teams from Districts that are Regional Winners will generate Wildcards at that event. Teams from Districts are also still not eligible to win the FIRST Impact Award, Engineering Inspiration, or Rookie All-Star award at Regional events.

This change is being made to bring more equity to the Championship advancement opportunities available to teams competing in the two competition models. We will share more details on FIRST Championship Advancement in the coming months.

Resources

With many of our teams returning to school shortly, we also wanted to share some of the work we have been doing to update resources to help teams this season. Last season, we released two documents to help FIRST Robotics Competition teams mentors: a Guide to Running a FIRST Robotics Competition Team and a Mentoring Guide. We have renamed the Mentoring Guide to the Effective Mentoring Guide as we wanted to focus more on the basic principles of being a mentor. This guide can be shared with both current mentors and new or prospective mentors. The Guide to Running a FIRST Robotics Competition Team has been updated to include more details in the calendar overview, a sample budget based on team reported data, and other smaller changes to keep the guide up to date.

Additionally, if you check out the Technical Resources webpage and the Team Management webpage, you may notice these pages have been updated and that some team created resources have been added. As noted on the webpages, some of the links lead to external web sites that are not endorsed or controlled by FIRST, but these resources have been reviewed by FIRST and we believe these resources will help many teams. We plan to continue to add resources over the coming months, so be sure to check back often.

So if win at local event, and doing more than that one for driving experience, it’s a wildcard going to another team that is only doing one event? So need victory at “away” event or be given wildcard if local single competitor won…..correct?

Hello - The answer to your question depends on if you team competes in a region that uses the District competition model or the Regional competition model. Teams who compete in Districts and travel outside that district to a Regional event cannot qualify for the FIRST Championship through the Regional event. Teams who compete in Regionals can qualify for the FIRST Championship at any Regional event they attend.
